Surviving Two Under Two...
Having two children under the age of two can be both a joyful and challenging experience. I learnt just how fast after my second arrived . An age gap of 17 months is super difficult especially as a working mom. There are many reasons and benefits of 2 under 2 such as:
1. Close Sibling Bond
2. Shared Interests and Playtime
3. Parenting Routine Efficiency
4.Efficiency with Baby Supplies
6. Similar Nap Schedules
7. A Built-In Playmate
8. A Sense of Accomplishment
9. Similar Parenting Approaches
10. Building Empathy Early On
11. More Family Memories
12. Potential for Earlier Freedom
13. Encourages Parental Adaptability
14. Double the Joy and Laughter
However in saying all of this managing the needs of a toddler and a newborn simultaneously often feels overwhelming, but with the right strategies and mindset, it can become more manageable. Here are some tips that helped me navigate life with two under two:
1. Embrace a Flexible Routine
Routine is vital, but flexibility is key when you have two little ones.Understanding that each day might not go as planned and this can help reduce stress
2. Synchronize Naps When Possible
Aim to get your children to nap at the same time whenever you can. This can give you a window of time to rest, take care of household chores, or enjoy a few minutes to yourself.
3. Prepare for the Day the night before
Having a diary is super helpful to keep track of appointment ,classes, lists etc. Try to prepare as much as possible, like meal prepping breakfast and lunches, taking out outfits .
4. Create a Safe Play Area
Designate a safe play area where your toddler can play independently while you tend to the baby.
5. Prioritize Needs
When both children need you at once, it’s crucial to determine who requires immediate attention. However I always try to remember that a toddler will remember a baby will not.
6. Keep Your Toddler Involved
To avoid jealousy and keep your toddler feeling included, involve them in caring for the baby..
7. Use Baby Gear to Your Advantage
A baby carrier allows you to keep your newborn close while still having your hands free to play with your toddler. A double stroller can be a lifesaver for walks or errands, and high chairs with toys can entertain the toddler while you feed the baby.
8. Accept Help When Offered
Don’t hesitate to accept help from family, friends, or neighbors. Whether it’s a friend offering to watch the kids for an hour, or a family member dropping off dinner, take advantage of the support. It’s okay to need a break or a little extra assistance during this busy time.
9. Focus on Self-Care (When You Can)
It’s easy to put your own needs last, but finding small moments for self-care is essential. A short walk, a quick shower, or a cup of tea during nap time can make a big difference in how you feel. Remember, taking care of yourself helps you take better care of your children.
10. Join a Support Group
11. Celebrate Small Wins
Having two children under two means that some days will feel like survival mode, and that’s okay. Celebrate the small wins—whether it’s getting everyone dressed, making it to the grocery store.Every little achievement is worth acknowledging.
12. Stay Positive and Be Patient
Remember that this phase is temporary, even if it feels never-ending in the moment.
Having two kids under two can be demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By finding a routine that works for your family, accepting help when needed, and maintaining a positive outlook, you can handle the challenges that come your way and enjoy the special moments that life with two little ones brings.
